Happy Friday W+F Family! Since it's now FINALLY feeling like fall (at least here in MO), let's talk about the quintessential fall fruit... APPLES 🍎 We all know apples for a fantastic source of fiber and nutrients (after all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, right?), plus there are SO MANY varieties of apples and ways to enjoy them! For this week's #experttipoftheweek, I'm going to share some activities and recipes you can use to engage your child. πŸ‚ First, let's talk opportunities for Language development. Use these simple concepts to increase knowledge and expressive skills: 🍎 Help your child use words to describe the apple--> red, green, yellow, round, crunchy, juicy, crisp, sweet, yummy, delicious, big, small... 🍏 Talk about different attributes--> It's a fruit, it comes from trees, you can eat it, it has a stem and seeds, you can buy them at a grocery store, you can pick them at the orchard, grandma uses them to make apple pie... 🍎 Work on sorting and categorization--> Put the red apples and green apples in different baskets, try to name other fruits that grow on trees, think of other fruits that are round, which apples are sweet and which ones are tart... 🍏 Teach prepositions and other language concepts--> Put the apple in/on/under/next to the basket, give me "all" of the apples, put "some" of the apples in the bag, find the "biggest" apple... πŸ‚ Next, you can use apples as an opportunity to expose your child to different types of apples and ways to eat them! This is especially beneficial for any child who is a picky eater. They get to be a "food scientist" and explore the ingredients without the pressure eat it. Let's look at some recipes and different ways to cook and serve apples! 🍽 Raw apples--> Serve whole, cut "stripes" using a veggie peeler (for kids who aren't fond of the peel), have your child help cut using an apple slicer, cut into thin slices, serve with peanut butter or plain yogurt (add sweetener of choice and a sprinkle of cinnamon!), add thin slices to savory foods (sandwiches, omelets, pizza)... πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Skillet Apples With Cinnamon--> https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/236250/skillet-apples-with-cinnamon/ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Apple Crisp--> https://www.thechunkychef.com/old-fashioned-easy-apple-crisp/#wprm-recipe-container-11755 πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Apple Chips--> https://www.wellplated.com/apple-chips/ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Apple Cider--> https://sallysbakingaddiction.com/homemade-apple-cider/ Comment below and let us know your favorite way to cook/eat apples!
